Pennant Park at Daybreak

At Big T Recreation, we love projects that don’t look like “just another playground.” At Pennant Park in Daybreak, we partnered with Earthscape, Loci, and the Daybreak team to create a ribbon-shaped wooden playground that winds through a circular neighborhood park in South Jordan, Utah. Adjacent to an existing play area with a tall climbing structure, this new playground brings a low, flowing, parkour-style experience that invites kids to run, climb, crawl, balance, and gather. Varying heights, see-through sections, and changing difficulty levels keep older kids challenged while still welcoming younger adventurers. The overall form subtly echoes the stepped shapes of the nearby Rio Tinto Kennecott copper mine, tying the playscape back to the region’s landscape and history.

Pennant Park | Daybreak – South Jordan, Utah

Pennant Park sits inside the Daybreak master-planned community, where parks and trails are always a short walk from home. The site for this playground was a perfect circle, ringed with paths, lawn, and shade trees—essentially a blank canvas waiting for a sculptural play piece.

Working with Earthscape and Loci, Big T Recreation helped bring “The Ribbon” to life: a flowing wood-and-rope structure that uncoils through the circle, dipping and rising to create climbing routes, hideouts, and gathering spots along the way. Rather than prescribing one “right” way to play, the playground encourages kids to decide their own routes, rules, and challenges.

From the street, the structure looks simple and modern. Once kids step inside, they discover tunnels, interior hammocks, flexible platforms, a balcony tower, and even an angled amphitheater that turns the whole piece into a wooden coliseum of play.

Signature Features

  • Ribbon-shaped climber – A continuous play path that winds through the park, creating a sense of movement and discovery from one end to the other.
  • Circular park setting – The playground sits in the middle of a circular lawn and path system, with views to homes, mountains, and gathering areas all around.
  • Rio Tinto–inspired form – Terraced, stepped geometry quietly references the nearby copper mine, connecting play to the region’s history and landscape.
  • Horizontal dynamism – Rather than competing with the existing tall play structure, this playground stretches out horizontally, offering a different style of challenge for older kids.
  • Immersive “play sculpture” – The design reads like public art and performs like a full-featured playground, drawing in families from across the neighborhood.

Playground Highlights

Pennant Park’s playground is all about movement, experimentation, and choice. Key elements include:

  • Climbing walls & holds – Curved wooden walls with rock-style handholds invite lateral climbs, diagonals, and creative routes—perfect for kids who love to scramble.
  • Ropes, nets & webbing – Criss-crossing “laser” ropes, climbing nets, and rope bridges create upper-body challenges and ever-changing routes.
  • Flexible rubber platforms – Springy, rubber-infused sections add bounce and instability, turning basic walking into a balancing act.
  • Tower with Juliet balcony – A central tower with interior hammocks and lookout balcony becomes a clubhouse, stage, or superhero HQ.
  • Tunnels & hideaways – Enclosed and semi-enclosed pockets give kids places to duck through, hide, whisper, or regroup with friends.
  • Angled amphitheater seating – Built-in seating along one side doubles as climbing terrain and a spot for parents to watch the action.
  • Green “forest” posts – Tall posts stained in shades of green rise through the structure, echoing the surrounding grove and framing the play space.

Throughout the piece, the height, transparency, and difficulty change, so kids can find just-right challenges whether they’re testing their courage or easing into new skills.

Comforts & Connections

Pennant Park is designed as a true neighborhood hangout, not just a quick-stop playground. Families will find:

  • Adjacent traditional playground – A nearby play structure with a taller tower offers more familiar play experiences for younger children.
  • Looping paths & trails – Walkways circle the playground and link into Daybreak’s wider trail network, inviting strolls, scooters, and bike rides.
  • Shaded seating & dining – Picnic tables, grills, and Adirondack chairs under shade trees make it easy to linger for dinner or weekend gatherings.
  • Sand & lawn play – Soft sand beneath the structure and open grassy areas around it give kids space for digging, running, and free play.

Built for Open-Ended, Non-Prescriptive Play

Pennant Park is a textbook example of non-prescriptive play: there are no labeled entrances, exits, or “start here” signs. Instead, kids invent their own courses, goals, and games.

  • Older kids & tweens can treat the structure like a parkour course, timing themselves, racing friends, or trying new combinations of obstacles.
  • Younger children explore at their own pace, finding tucked-away spots, sand play, and low routes that feel safe but adventurous.
  • Neighbors and caregivers get a beautiful, artful space to relax, socialize, and watch kids play in the heart of the community.

The result is a playground that grows with the neighborhood—always offering new ways to play as kids get taller, braver, and more creative.
