At Big T Recreation, we love projects that don’t look like “just another playground.” At Pennant Park in Daybreak, we partnered with Earthscape, Loci, and the Daybreak team to create a ribbon-shaped wooden playground that winds through a circular neighborhood park in South Jordan, Utah. Adjacent to an existing play area with a tall climbing structure, this new playground brings a low, flowing, parkour-style experience that invites kids to run, climb, crawl, balance, and gather. Varying heights, see-through sections, and changing difficulty levels keep older kids challenged while still welcoming younger adventurers. The overall form subtly echoes the stepped shapes of the nearby Rio Tinto Kennecott copper mine, tying the playscape back to the region’s landscape and history.
Pennant Park sits inside the Daybreak master-planned community, where parks and trails are always a short walk from home. The site for this playground was a perfect circle, ringed with paths, lawn, and shade trees—essentially a blank canvas waiting for a sculptural play piece.
Working with Earthscape and Loci, Big T Recreation helped bring “The Ribbon” to life: a flowing wood-and-rope structure that uncoils through the circle, dipping and rising to create climbing routes, hideouts, and gathering spots along the way. Rather than prescribing one “right” way to play, the playground encourages kids to decide their own routes, rules, and challenges.
From the street, the structure looks simple and modern. Once kids step inside, they discover tunnels, interior hammocks, flexible platforms, a balcony tower, and even an angled amphitheater that turns the whole piece into a wooden coliseum of play.
Pennant Park’s playground is all about movement, experimentation, and choice. Key elements include:
Throughout the piece, the height, transparency, and difficulty change, so kids can find just-right challenges whether they’re testing their courage or easing into new skills.
Pennant Park is designed as a true neighborhood hangout, not just a quick-stop playground. Families will find:
Pennant Park is a textbook example of non-prescriptive play: there are no labeled entrances, exits, or “start here” signs. Instead, kids invent their own courses, goals, and games.
The result is a playground that grows with the neighborhood—always offering new ways to play as kids get taller, braver, and more creative.
Our team is dedicated to crafting spaces that reflect your unique style and needs—one thoughtful step at a time.
